Hello! My name is Cal, Board Certified Medical Psychologist. I embody understanding and compassion in my approach to mental health care, trauma and other chronic psychological challenges that people experience. With a wealth of experience gleaned from diverse backgrounds, I guide individuals through their journeys of self-discovery and healing through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I have over 38 years of experience in the field of medicine and clinical psychology. I have deep expertise and skills that address how thoughts, feelings, and emotions interplay with medical conditions that often are treated with medication. Some medical conditions, specifically chronic pain, are influenced by depression, anxiety and even trauma. There are now several states that allow clinical psychologists who have trained in psychopharmacology to prescribe. I have had the privilege of working for hospital systems in developing chronic pain interdisciplinary pain programs throughout the country. I work very closely with primary care providers and pain management physicians when psychological skills are required to improve coping with and living with chronic pain as well as supporting medication titration.

What can members expect to take away from sessions with you?

I am aware of how beliefs and attitudes regarding medical treatment may not provide the desired relief or expectations desired. The struggle to get rid of pain may be what is deeply desired, but we know that it is often not achieved. I am invested in helping clients find effective ways of coping with pain and how beliefs, expectations and attitudes can contribute to greater stress, compounding the pain experience. At my core, I am compassionate and convinced one’s relationship with pain can be altered. I will work diligently to assist in learning methods for identifying ways of changing ineffective thinking patterns that complicate emotional reactions.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths?

I am compassionate about the complexity of life and that there are concerns, issues, medical realities that influence our life quality. I cherish the elements of medicine that improve life quality but am not naïve about the aspects that create more complications. Helping clients find their strengths and values that propel their life forward is what matters most to me.

My Treatment Methods

I am very influenced by cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as a means for identifying unhelpful or helpful thoughts that contribute to emotional reactions; identifying thinking distortions that interfere with effective thinking. I also am very influenced by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) a therapy that emphasizes the value of being willing to accept what is real in the moment; and deciding what you are able to do to influence life’s outcome.
